South Korean President Adopts A Dog Rescued From The Dog Meat Trade

Moon Jae-In, the recently elected president of South Korea, has sent a message of optimism to animal lovers everywhere by adopting Tory, a rescue dog who was formerly used in the dog meat trade. There are efforts underway to ban celebrations like China’s Yulin or South Korea’s Bok Nal days, when it is alleged that the majority of dog meat is consumed.

Dog meat is regarded as a seasonal delicacy in some regions of South Korea, where if properly cooked, it is said to have particular therapeutic benefits.

There are around 17,000 dog meat farms in the nation, where between 2.5 million and 10 million dogs are killed each year for eating, although there are presently no laws or regulations prohibiting dog farming.

Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE), a South Korean organization that rescues and cares for injured and abandoned animals, gave Moon Jae-In the 4-year-old puppy to adopt.

Little Tory was rescued by CARE from a dog meat farm two years ago, but he had a hard time finding a home because of superstitions about his dark-colored fur, according to Yonhap News.

Tory will be the first mixed-breed homeless dog to represent the country.

The news of Tory’s adoption and his delivery to the president were posted on the Facebook page of the Blue House, the president’s official house.

Little Tory will not be alone in his significant political position since Maru, a 10-year-old dog from Pungsan, and her rescue cat named Jjing-jjing will be residing in the Blue House with him.
