The worst was anticipated given his health and the presence of cougars in the region after several days of fruitless searching.

Sage Cole’s mother, Beth Cole, stated to The Mercury News:

“Our neighbors and other members of the community assisted us in the hunt for a week, day and night.”

Fortunately, Sage was sleeping by the creek waiting for help when Dan and his hiking companions discovered her. Dan came up and gave Sage a bear embrace as soon as he saw her after Sage heard the folks who were near to her.

Dan stated:

“I jumped into the water and gave her a bear hug when we discovered she was still alive. Actually, it was a miracle.

Sage lived close to her owners’ home and frequently played with her two dogs, so the man knew her well. Sage was exhausted and frail after spending a week wandering in the woods, so Dan carried her up the hill on her shoulders.
