The Loneliest Elephant In The World Is Released After 35 Years

After spending more than 35 years in an enclosure at the Marghazar Zoo in the Pakistani city of Isalamabad, the world’s loneliest elephant will finally be liberated.

The harsh existence of the elephant Kaavan had become one of the primary concerns of animal rights activists, who, after struggling and demanding for his freedom, were ultimately able to get the elephant transported to a site where his way of life would totally alter.

Kaavan had been confined since 1985 and had lost his girlfriend in 2012, causing him to suffer from loneliness.

FOUR PAWS, an international animal welfare group, intervened to follow up on the matter since the unfortunate animal was a persistent victim of cruelty and neglect by the administration.

Kaavan gained medical permission to travel after undergoing a general examination on September 4, according to Martn Bauer, an organization representative. Although his particular destination is unknown, it is expected that he will travel to Cambodia, where he will be in better conditions and among other elephants.

Kaavan had a miserable and terrible existence at the zoo, living alone in a small cage in appalling circumstances.

He was overweight despite displaying indications of starvation, and his nails were damaged from walking for years on a floor that injured his legs, according to the medical examination.

In a statement, Martin said:

“He also exhibited stereotypic behavior, which means he spends hours moving his head from side to side. This is primarily due to his boredom «.

The Marghazar Zoo was ordered closed by the country’s High Court because of its deplorable circumstances, which were ascribed to institutional negligence.

Animal advocates from all around the world rallied to save Kaavan from his dreadful living conditions. This story received so much media attention that celebrities like Cher, the American singer, lobbied for her early release and transfer.

Martin stated, ”

“Unfortunately, the rescue comes too late for two lions who perished in late July when local wildlife caretakers set fire to their cage in an attempt to force them into transport boxes.”

The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board asked FOUR PAWS to conduct medical tests and aid with the translocation of zoo animals.

Martin stated, ”

“Following confirmation that Kaavan is well enough, measures will be made to finalize his transfer to an animal sanctuary, most likely in Cambodia.”
